The father of this family, John Collings Parkyn - a successful corn and pit-wood merchant - was also a very talented artist, responsible for the pen-and-ink drawings. He must have been quite a man. To her dying day in 1988, his granddaughter - my grandmother - remembered him very lovingly. Taken about 1880 at Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales.
