- BIOGRAPHY from another researcher:
Edward Slaughter was born in Sandwich, Kent, England and taken to the ancestral pa rish of Holy Cross Westgate, Canterbury, Kent, England to be christened. The Slaughter famil y had a tannery in Canterbury and a home in North Lane, just north of the parish church of Ho ly Cross, just outside of the walls of Canterbury. It is assumed that the paternal grandpare nts were living in Canterbury at the time. BIOGRAPHY: Edward was trained in the tanning business and probably worked in both the tanner y in Canterbury and the one in Sandwich. When the Thomas Slaughter family moved to Seal, Ken t about 1814, Edward would have been only about seven years old and it is not known whether h e was in Seal or serving an apprenticeship in Canterbury or Sandwich with other family member s in the tannery. He had three brothers and a sister born in Seal. Sometime following the b irth and death of the youngest child, Samuel Nathaniel Slaughter, at least part of the famil y moved to Scotland, apparently in pursuit of the leather trade. In Thomas' will, written i n Glasgow, Scotland, he is described as a "leather agent." Edward was there and signed a s a witness in 1831.

In 1832 Edward married Catherine Cronk in St Clement's Church, Sandwich, Kent, Eng land and by 1839 they had gone to South Africa, following her parents, John Cronk and Ann Bur y, who together with their other three children were among the 1820 Settlers of South Africa . Edward and Catherine were accompanied on their journey by Elizabeth Cronk, Catherine's aun t and John Cronk's sister.

Their first child, Samuel Nathaniel Slaughter was born in October 1840 in Uitenhag e, Cape Province, South Africa probably about a year after they left England. Three other ch ildren, all daughters, were born to them in Uitenhage between 1840 an 1852,

The first full-time missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Sai nts arrived in Capetown in 1853 and soon made their way eastward and met the Slaughter famil y soon afterward. Edward and probably Catherine were baptized into the new church sometime i n 1854. By November 1855, when some of the missionaries were leaving for home in Utah. Edwar d. by then an Elder in the church, baptized both of his oldest children, Samuel Nathaniel an d Emma Catherine Elizabeth Slaughter.

Edward's eldest son, Samuel Nathaniel left South Africa aboard the Sailing Bark "A lacrity" bound for Utah in the company of the John Stock family and the Clara W Huey family i n 1860. He married the eldest daughter in the Huey family, Annie Elizabeth Huey, on the hig h seas on 4 Jun 1860 some days before the ship arrived in BOSTON on 13 Jun 1860, and before C lara Huey's ship arrived on the 15th. (See notes for Clara W Thomas for the "rest of the sto ry.")

Catherine Cronk Slaughter, accompanied by her three daughters, and son in law, Ado lphus Henry Noon, left Port Elizabeth in 1865 bound for Utah, leaving Edward behind to take c are of the remaining church members and assist those who desired to emigrate to go to Utah . Finally in 1867, Edward left South Africa, bound first for England, where he visited uncles, aunts, cousins and a brother and his sisters, before departing Liverpool on the steamship "Manhattan" bound for New York arriving on July 4th 1867, and ultimately Utah.

Edward crossed the plains most of the way by rail and the last part of the journe y by ox train, as the transcontinental railroad was not completed until 1869. His ox train arrived in Salt Lake City on the day they first used the present Tabernacle for General Conference. It is unknown whether he stayed in Salt Lake City or traveled on to Provo. Samuel Nathaniel and his family were in Salt Lake City but the Noons and Glanfields were in Provo and I believe Catherine was there with them.

- ORDINANCES: Edward Slaughter was baptized in South Africa by the first LDS missionaries to preach the gospel there. The exact date was lost and the ordinances were performed again in 1934 vicariously. I had always believed that the ordinances were performed in Mesa, Arizona but I discovered some old Endowment Sheets submitted by Lorin Osborn and the ordinances were actually performed at the Manti Temple. Baptism date was corrected from Jan to Jul and both Baptism and Endowments took place in Manti.

“I came across [Anthony Daniel Slaughter] in the South African Archives.  He died in Uitenhage, in the Cape, had a wife called Mary (mentioned on his Death Notice) and three children who were underage at his death in 1849.  They were, somewhat unoriginally, Thomas, Mary and William.  Unfortunately no more details were available.  South African sources are sparse and difficult to negotiate. ” [Uitenhage , Eastern Cape, South Africa is abt 25km?
