- 1901 - Mary made her Will Nov.2,1901, proved Jan. 23,1907.

- 1905 - She died 20 March, 1905 in Winnipeg - assume she was living with son Horace Melville. The will was probated in P.E.I. She left everything to be equally divided between Horace Melville and Fanny Louisa. Frederick G. did the inventory.

- 1905 - death registration no. 1905-003205 gives only last name: COMPTON, given names: MARY ROBINSON, place of death: WPG, and age at death: 78. (http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca) - certificate says she died at 501 Cathedra Ave. due to Asthenia, 10 days duration as per Dr. Woollard. Informant was Clarel (?) Bros. & Hughes of Winnipeg as of 13 May 1905 (registration date).

- no dates on gravestones (stone 54) - PEIGS transcript for St Johns in St Eleanors says: Compton In memory of Harry C. Compton; his wife Mary R. Coates.
- St Johns Anglican Cemetery (St Eleanors) Transcript: Grave 54 lists just Harry C. [sic] and Mary R Compton (no dates).

- 1907 - will probated Mary made her Will Nov.2,1901, proved Jan. 23,1907.
- From photocopies of the handwritten wills of Albert H. and Mary R. Compton, parents of Fanny (Compton) McMillan.  Albert died first, and mentioned his wife Mary R. Compton, George Compton [probably refers to his oldest son], his son Henry William, son Leslie H. Compton, son Melville, and Charles Palmer [probably an investor, lawyer or banker] in his will.  When Mary died in Winnipeg in 1905, she left her estate to her son Horace Melville Complin [sic] and her daughter Fanny Louisa Complin [sic].  In the type-written probate papers, schedule C, it lists the names of those who inherited; there were just 2:
Horace Melville Compton of Winnipeg, Manitoba, farmer, son of deceased, age 35, and Fannie Louisa McMillan of British Columbia, wife of James McMilan, daughter of decesaed, age 40. These documents were filed in the probate court, PEI, on Feb 15, 1907. The only inventory listed in the will and probate papers was a $1000 mortgage on Henry W. Compton's land at Saint Eleanors PEI, which was split equally between them.

RESEARCH NOTES:
- Last name variant spelling: Coaxs, Cotes, Coats...

From other researchers and family sources:
- Mary was from Essex County [but born in Suffolk], England. She was the niece of William Coates who resided with the T. C. Compton Family [in PEI Canada] for many years, teaching the children.
- LEGEND: brought out from Suffolk, England by her Uncle William Coates, who became a school teacher in St. Eleanor's PEI. [Originally thought her emigration date was 1827, same as for William Coates, but 1901 census says Mary was born in 1827 and emigrated 1847. William emigrated 1827 (cf. Memories, A Historic View of St. Eleanor’s), so “brought out” likely means“sent for” rather than “came with”] ...

- 1841: not living with parents
This is my favourite of many possible sightings, primarily because it’s in Suffolk and one of the few claiming Suffolk as her birth place. Woodbridge is NE of Ipswich, on A12 and near the initial widening of the River Deben

- St Johns Anglican Cemetery (St Eleanors) Transcript: Grave 54 lists just Harry C. and Mary R Compton (no dates). The next grave #55 (seems to be in the Compton section) has "?" as a surname and lists these 3 young girls. If the dates are accurately transcribed, I have trouble assigning them to Harry Albert and Mary R Compton, as follows:
- "Mary Eliza d. Nov 18 1845, Ae 10 mos" - therefore born Feb 1845 - our Mary Coates didn't come to PEI until Nov 1847, so this couldn't be her child. Or perhaps the printing was eroded to make dates indistinct and the transcribed date was wrong, or perhaps H.A. had an illegitimate child before Mary arrived, or the baby belongs to another family.
- "Margaret G., d. Sept 16, 1859 ae 5 yr, 8 mos" - therefore born Feb 1854. Harry Albert and Mary had a daughter Sara Hana born 7 Nov 1854 - cutting it close with 9 - 10 months between, but I suppose doable!
- "Elizabeth S., d. Sept 16, 1859, Ae 3 yr, 5 mos" - therefore born Apr 1856. Horace James Compton was born 2 Aug 1856, making it a tad difficult for Mary Coates to be the mother!.
I also checked the PEI baptismal index online - there were 7 Compton baptisms listed in all of PEI in the 1840s, and 40 in the 1850s, but I couldn't find any of these 3 girls listed among them. Either the baptismal records are incomplete, or we have the wrong surname.
Ca 1848 when Mary Robinson was 20, she married Albert Harry* COMPTON , son of Major Thomas Compton COMPTON (~1789-1850) & Hannah JEFFERY (1790-1871). Born on 17 Jun 1823 in PEI, Canada. - Family story: His son Mel told his sons that his father was a “potentate”, saying that he drove around his property telling people what to do, and that the girls on the farm did all the work. [definition of potentate: a person who possesses great power, as a sovereign, monarch, or ruler]

RESEARCH NOTES:
- Originally entered as Harry Albert Compton with a family of 12 childrern.

- Marriage research by another researcher: “At the Charlottetown archives, I checked the microfilm for St. John's Anglican and no sign of Mary and Harry A's marriage. I checked the microfilm of marriage licenses for 1848-49, nope. I thought perhaps they eloped and went to Nova Scotia or N.B. so checked online there - nope, and nope. Either they were "living in sin" or the records are lost.”

Death and burial possibilities:
- from another researcher: Mary's sister Hannah [Harriet] Elizabeth Coates, death from Free BMD Sep qtr 1868 Easington vol 10a page 254. Easington is in Durham age 40 yrs. - don’t think this is a match
- found another death in freeBMD:
Deaths Sep 1861
Coates Harriet Elizabeth Clifton 6a 45 Clifton is in the county of Gloucestershire. This is likely the one because a probable uncle George Lewis Coates lived there in 1861.

- from another researcher: Clifton is [now] an inner suburb of Bristol, but at that time [1861] Bristol was often considered to be in Gloucestershire.  Bristol is the only English city other than London (as far as I know) that is both a city and a county, so Clifton is actually in the city and county of Bristol.  I lived in Bristol for more than 20 years - and for some years in the suburb adjacent to Clifton.  Clifton is not quite as salubrious as it once was but, in the 1800's and first half of the 1900's, was about the most prestigious suburb of Bristol and anyone living there was quite well-to-do.

- Many other family members died in 1862, perhaps an epidemic?
* checked the National Burial Index:
For Essex (incomplete coverage), no Harriet Elizabeth Coates listed. Only close entry was:

- 1832: Sarah Abbott Coates, daughter of James (draper) and Sarah Coates, baptised Feb 12, 1832 in South Elmham All Saints, Suffolk, England

- 1841 census: Sarah Coates, age 9, living in Kirby Essex with parents.

- 1861 census: Sarah Abbott Coates, age 28, born South Elmham Suffolk, unmarried, living with parents and younger sister Fanny in Weeley, Essex England.

RESEARCH NOTES:
- IGI source (private individual) seals Sarah Abbott Coates to this family. Not listed as a child of James and Sarah Coates in the Vital Records Index for Suffolk, perhaps because they moved to Essex?

* for other counties - haven’t checked yet

- Today Kirby-le-Soken is a small village in North East Essex, an agricultural and increasingly residential corner of the county. Although the village has managed to stay distinct and separate from the growing conurbations of Frinton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze (formerly Walton-le-Soken), it is a developed and working village, not a time capsule. - from kirby-le-soken.co.uk - it is near the coast east of Colchester.
