On 16 Apr 1864 when Joseph was 25, he married Mary Jane BIRD in Parish Church, Abbotsham, Devon, England. Born on 20 May 1843 in Great Torrington, Devon, England. Mary Jane died in 7 Cumberland Road, Newport, Mon, Wales, on 21 Feb 1914; she was 70.

Mary Jane died at age 70 and was interred at Cardiff New Cemetary on 21st Feb. 1914. On Jane's marriage certificate to Charles Henry Hockridge, it does not name who her father was. I am wondering if she was illegitimate or maybe her mother died in childbirth. She appears age 7 on the 1851 census as the grandchild of James and Mary Bird and again age 17 on the 1861 census. By 1871 she is married. Between the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census James Bird and Mary have 6 known children:- Emma 1816, Matilda 1821, Fanny, 1840, Sophia 1843, Henry 1830 and Elisa 1834. There could be others. Out of those found, the only possible parent could be eitha Emma or Matilda. I have not as yet been able to find the Marriage of James and Mary. This could indicate if there were children before 1816. The 1841 census showes a Louisa Vincent age 10 living with them. Marriage Details Vol 5b Page 907 District Bideford April/May/ June Quarter Since this comment was first recorded in 2008 I now find even though Mary Jane was living with her grandparents her father was Thomas bird and mother Mary Northcote. Thomas was shown in the 1851 census as living with his brother John.
