- Rose appears to have stayed in Brede as she had an illegitimate daughter there in 1818 - Mary Ann Watson Richardson, fathered by Walter Watson, and Rose was described as a 'pauper'. Then on 6 October 1821 at Brede Rose married Samuel Pankhurst, and the marriage was witnessed by Barbara Noakes and Thomas Furner. Rose made her mark whereas the others signed their names. Being a pauper and unable to sign her name does make her untypical of the Richardsons generally, although John Richardson did end up in the Workhouse.
- Rose Richardson and husband Samuel Pankhurst had 5 children :- Harriett bap 1822 Sedlescombe; Philly/Phillis bap 1824 Mountfield; William bap 1829 Mountfield (my gr gr grandfather); James bap 1832 Mountfield; Joseph bap 1834 Mountfield. There's a gap between 1824 and 1829 but I haven't found any other baptisms.
RESEARCH NOTES
- Baptism records suggest she was the base bor daughter Sarah Richardson (no father listed, and assume Richardson was mother’s maiden name). Bapatism took place St George Church Brede Sussex on 31 Jun 1796.
So was Rose really the daughter of John Richardson and Sarah Bourne as others suggest?
Rose first married Walter WATSON.
Walter Watson seems to have married Mary Cook, 14 05 1818 at Ewhurst.
His child Mary Ann Watson Richardson, baptised Mar 1818, no father listed in baptism register, was baseborn.
On 6 Oct 1821 when Rose was 25, she second married Samuel PANKHURST in Brede, East Sussex, England.

- It looks as if they moved up to London as there's a death for a Henry Sarles in St Giles district Dec q 1859 ref 1b 278 and for a Sarah Sarles Dec q 1863 Marylebone ref 1a 381. I can't find Sarah at 1861 but the name Sarles is very easily misheard or mistranscribed. Daughters Helen and Jane both married in London.
On 22 Jun 1829 when Sarah “Sally” was 23, she married Henry SARLES Sr. in Fairlight, Hastings, East Sussex, England. Henry died in Q4 1859 in St Giles, London, England. Occupation: Jeweller And Watchmaker.
- Henry Sarles, widower, married Sarah Richardson at Fairlight on 22 June 1829. At 1841 and 1851 Henry and Sally Sarles and their children were living in George Street, Hastings which is a street which adjoins High Street in the Old Town of Hastings and may help a little to explain why James Richardson came to be in the Old Town area when he died in 1856. Sarah 'Sally' could be the daughter of John Richardson and Sarah Bourne bap Brede 17 October 1806. At 1841 her age is 29 and at 1851 it's 42, birthplace Brede. There doesn't seem to be another Sarah Richardson from Brede who'd fit the bill. It looks as if they moved up to London as there's a death for a Henry Sarles in St Giles district Dec q 1859 ref 1b 278 and for a Sarah Sarles Dec q 1863 Marylebone ref 1a 381. I can't find Sarah at 1861 but the name Sarles is very easily misheard or mistranscribed. Daughters Helen and Jane both married in London.
