69. Mary COMPTON (John5, John4, Tristram3, John “the Elder”2, Edward1). Born ca 1705 in England.
70. Elizabeth COMPTON (John5, John4, Tristram3, John “the Elder”2, Edward1). Born ca 1710 in England. Buried in Enford Churchyard.

From other researchers:
- Elizabeth was described in the 1770’s as a proprietor of land in Barton Stacey. At one point her brother-in-law Thomas acted on her behalf. She describes herself as “of Foxcotte”, a tiny hamlet which had a minute chapel. They knew the Jennings family who lived at Penton Mewsey, Mary Jennings being Thomas’ only daughter. James Jennings, a relation of George, Mary’s husband, witnessed Elizabeth’s will in October 1793. In the will both John and Ann benefitted considerably.
On 30 Jul 1743 when Elizabeth was 33, she married John COMPTON (74) , son of Thomas COMPTON (54) (1668-1735) & Elizabeth (ca1670-1753), in Preshute, England. Born in 1709 in England. Christened on 3 Apr 1737 in Enford, Wiltshire, England. John died in England in 1750; he was 41. Buried in Enford Churchyard.

From other researchers:
- Thomas, gentleman married Ann Compton of South Tidworth, [his first] cousin. He lived from 1705-91 and she from 1709-85. They moved to Amport in Hampshire and began their own dynasty. Their children were Thomas (1731-95), Mary (1732-32), Mary (1740-1813). Frances Mount Childeroy was adopted by the Comptons.

- From image of a handwritten memorial for Thomas Compton, undated, written on the reverse side of a bible page “frontispiece”:
“On Wednesday last died at his house at the Lains after a long & painful illness Thos Compton Esq’r a Gentleman respected by all who knew him and whose loss is sincerely lamented by a numerous Family. He was of the first branch of the ancient Family of the Comptons of Wilts whole possessions prior to the Norman Conquest were very considerable & many villages then their property still bear the name.
Mrs Westcotts mother was a Daughter of the above named Thos Compton”

- From images of an inlaid cabinet and handwritten notes about its provenance:
“This Cabinet was given by Mr Mrs Stephen Tunks? of Ringwood to their nephew Charles Stephen Westcott a? Surgeon of Ringwood on his marriage about 1830.
Mrs Tunks, his mother the wife of William Westcott also Surgeon of Ringwood were daughters of Jennings Esquire of Barnfield? near Ringwood, Mrs Jennings their [end of image 1]
mother was the daughter of Thos. Compton Esqr, was born at Foschiten Hants in 1763. The Comptons were of the first Branch of the Comptons of Wiltshire Landowners there befre the Conquest.
The Cabinet was left to Sophia daughter of Charles Wesscott wife of James Appleford of Ringwood, then to his daughter Annie wife of E P S Jones. [end of image 2]”

- Family legend:
Thomas Compton (1705-91) is said to have bought [brought] a French orphan home and adopted her. Her name was Frances Mount Childeroy who was born in 1739. The legend expanded to make her an heiress as well as an orphan (did her parents die in a carriage crash?) and to have brought a bag of gold with her. [no proof has been found that she was French; this legend may not be true]

- Thomas Sr’s will tells us that he actually owned over 1000 acres of land. The wording makes no mistake of this. He and his brother Edmund dabbled in the East India Company stocks and did well..

- Before [their daughter Mary’s] birth they were living in Preshute at the Parsonage House, having leased it on 14.5.1735 for 20 years. It was oddly renewed in 1739 for 21 years. Later in 1753 Anne [Cooper] Compton, widow, of Cholderton leases it in her name for 21 years. She died in 1772, aged 88, so had time. Anne was the widow of John Compton of Tidworth and Thomas’ aunt. The Preshute connection makes sense as Edmund (died 1788) lived nearby and was buried in the church of St. George.
[Preshute is a civil parish immediately west and northwest of Marlborough in Wiltshire, England. To the west: Avebury. To the north: Wroughton and Swindon. To the east: Newbury (~25km)]

- In 1736 Thomas paid 140 pounds and became qualified to sit on the jury of North Tidworth Manor Court. In 1761 he was arbitrator for a land deal in Collingbourne Ducis. He acted also on behalf of Elizabeth Compton, his sister-in-law, in connection with her land.

- 1786 Thomas made his will on May 9, 1786, witnessed by John Holloway (the local blacksmith no doubt shoeing horses for him), John Milliner and Samuel Tyler. He gives Thomas Jr. “all my land for the term of his life”. It is then to divide as follows:
> Thomas Jr’ son Thomas - the north side of my Down farm being also 250 acres
> His granddaughter Frances Weekes - all the south part being about 240 acres
> His grandsons George, Edmund and granddaughter Elizabeth - the upper part of the Lains farm being about 200 acres
> Edward and John, Mary and Ann (Jennings) - all the lower part of the Lains farm being about 240 acres.
> Harry got Old Lodge Farm in Wallop.
With the areas mentioned above coming to 930 acres, Old Lodge would have topped the 1000 acres..
“I give unto my son’s wife if (she) should outlive him, five pounds a year out of each of the farms during her life and also the interest of 700 pounds East India Stock of 3 per cent annuities”. This was Frances, not mentioned by name.
His daughter Mary, wife of George Jennings of Penton Mewsey, was to recieve the interest of 1400 pounds in the 3 per cent East India Stock, so he had 2100 pounds in the Easts India Company too.
The will was proved on 14 May 1791 in London as it was a Prerogative Court of Canterbury will. His son Thomas was the sole executor. He died in 1791 according to the burial register, but in 1790 according to his grave inscription on his altar tomb. It is on the other side of the boys’ grave. He was 86.
They had the following children:
94i.
Thomas COMPTON (~1731-1795)
95ii.
Mary COMPTON (Died as Infant) (1732-1732)
96iii.
Mary COMPTON (1740-1813)
