From other researchers:
- Thomas, gentleman married Ann Compton of South Tidworth, [his first] cousin. He lived from 1705-91 and she from 1709-85. They moved to Amport in Hampshire and began their own dynasty. Their children were Thomas (1731-95), Mary (1732-32), Mary (1740-1813). Frances Mount Childeroy was adopted by the Comptons.

- From image of a handwritten memorial for Thomas Compton, undated, written on the reverse side of a bible page “frontispiece”:
“On Wednesday last died at his house at the Lains after a long & painful illness Thos Compton Esq’r a Gentleman respected by all who knew him and whose loss is sincerely lamented by a numerous Family. He was of the first branch of the ancient Family of the Comptons of Wilts whole possessions prior to the Norman Conquest were very considerable & many villages then their property still bear the name.
Mrs Westcotts mother was a Daughter of the above named Thos Compton”

- From images of an inlaid cabinet and handwritten notes about its provenance:
“This Cabinet was given by Mr Mrs Stephen Tunks? of Ringwood to their nephew Charles Stephen Westcott a? Surgeon of Ringwood on his marriage about 1830.
Mrs Tunks, his mother the wife of William Westcott also Surgeon of Ringwood were daughters of Jennings Esquire of Barnfield? near Ringwood, Mrs Jennings their [end of image 1]
mother was the daughter of Thos. Compton Esqr, was born at Foschiten Hants in 1763. The Comptons were of the first Branch of the Comptons of Wiltshire Landowners there befre the Conquest.
The Cabinet was left to Sophia daughter of Charles Wesscott wife of James Appleford of Ringwood, then to his daughter Annie wife of E P S Jones. [end of image 2]”

- Family legend:
Thomas Compton (1705-91) is said to have bought [brought] a French orphan home and adopted her. Her name was Frances Mount Childeroy who was born in 1739. The legend expanded to make her an heiress as well as an orphan (did her parents die in a carriage crash?) and to have brought a bag of gold with her. [no proof has been found that she was French; this legend may not be true]

- Thomas Sr’s will tells us that he actually owned over 1000 acres of land. The wording makes no mistake of this. He and his brother Edmund dabbled in the East India Company stocks and did well..

- Before [their daughter Mary’s] birth they were living in Preshute at the Parsonage House, having leased it on 14.5.1735 for 20 years. It was oddly renewed in 1739 for 21 years. Later in 1753 Anne [Cooper] Compton, widow, of Cholderton leases it in her name for 21 years. She died in 1772, aged 88, so had time. Anne was the widow of John Compton of Tidworth and Thomas’ aunt. The Preshute connection makes sense as Edmund (died 1788) lived nearby and was buried in the church of St. George.
[Preshute is a civil parish immediately west and northwest of Marlborough in Wiltshire, England. To the west: Avebury. To the north: Wroughton and Swindon. To the east: Newbury (~25km)]

- In 1736 Thomas paid 140 pounds and became qualified to sit on the jury of North Tidworth Manor Court. In 1761 he was arbitrator for a land deal in Collingbourne Ducis. He acted also on behalf of Elizabeth Compton, his sister-in-law, in connection with her land.

- 1786 Thomas made his will on May 9, 1786, witnessed by John Holloway (the local blacksmith no doubt shoeing horses for him), John Milliner and Samuel Tyler. He gives Thomas Jr. “all my land for the term of his life”. It is then to divide as follows:
> Thomas Jr’ son Thomas - the north side of my Down farm being also 250 acres
> His granddaughter Frances Weekes - all the south part being about 240 acres
> His grandsons George, Edmund and granddaughter Elizabeth - the upper part of the Lains farm being about 200 acres
> Edward and John, Mary and Ann (Jennings) - all the lower part of the Lains farm being about 240 acres.
> Harry got Old Lodge Farm in Wallop.
With the areas mentioned above coming to 930 acres, Old Lodge would have topped the 1000 acres..
“I give unto my son’s wife if (she) should outlive him, five pounds a year out of each of the farms during her life and also the interest of 700 pounds East India Stock of 3 per cent annuities”. This was Frances, not mentioned by name.
His daughter Mary, wife of George Jennings of Penton Mewsey, was to recieve the interest of 1400 pounds in the 3 per cent East India Stock, so he had 2100 pounds in the Easts India Company too.
The will was proved on 14 May 1791 in London as it was a Prerogative Court of Canterbury will. His son Thomas was the sole executor. He died in 1791 according to the burial register, but in 1790 according to his grave inscription on his altar tomb. It is on the other side of the boys’ grave. He was 86.
On 13 May 1730 when Thomas was 25, he married Ann COMPTON (71) , daughter of John COMPTON (51) (1663-1729) & Ann COOPER (1684-1772), in North Tidworth, Wiltshire, England. Born in 1709 in England. Ann died in England in 1785; she was 76.

On 30 Jul 1743 when John was 34, he married Elizabeth COMPTON (70) , daughter of John COMPTON (51) (1663-1729) & Ann COOPER (1684-1772), in Preshute, England. Born ca 1710 in England. Buried in Enford Churchyard.

From other researchers:
- Elizabeth was described in the 1770’s as a proprietor of land in Barton Stacey. At one point her brother-in-law Thomas acted on her behalf. She describes herself as “of Foxcotte”, a tiny hamlet which had a minute chapel. They knew the Jennings family who lived at Penton Mewsey, Mary Jennings being Thomas’ only daughter. James Jennings, a relation of George, Mary’s husband, witnessed Elizabeth’s will in October 1793. In the will both John and Ann benefitted considerably.

From other researchers:
unmarried gentleman. Savernake
Will 1788.
Edmund did well in the world. At some point he went to live near his brother Thomas “The Landowner” at Quarley. He was living in this village in 1760 as the fact is mentioned in the East India Company’s shre registers where it is stated that he bought 700 ppounds of 3% annuities between 1758 and 1759, selling it in 1760. Quarley is a village next to Amport.

While visiting his relations at Middlecot and the The Lains he might have met Mary Wallis. The Wallis family were active in both the Chitternes and Amport. Mary appears to have been what we call a “partner” today rather than a wedded wife. He moved to Savernake Park nearl Marlborough where he acquired a leasehold from Lord Aylesbury. There was a Compotn Farm there at one time. It is unlikely that Edmund actually drove a plough himself. Described as a gentleman it is more likely he employed poeople. When a later Compton was at a very low ebb and only had 200 acres left, he still employed 14 men. While there he bought 2700 pounds of stock in the IEC and died. Of this 200 pounds went to his brother Thomas, and 700 pounds worth went to “reduced ledger”. Thomas is also described as a gentleman, and by HIS death had 210 pounds of EIC stock.

Edmund’s will tells us he had that leashold for “99 years or fourscore and nineteen years, determinable upon my own life and the lives of Mary Wallis and Thomas Compton, the grandson of my brother Thomas Compton.” His partner, Mary Wallis, was to get 105 pounds, “the best bed, bolster, pillows, quilt, blankets, bedstead and furniture thereto belonging and my tea equipage”. Edmund left a silver tankard to each of Thomas Compton (1756-1836) and to John Compton (1745-1802). These had his name and coat of arms on them. He left 15 guineas each to his niece Mary Jennings and to his sister Sarah Hiscock’s daughter Jenny Franken, with instructions to have similar ones made.

Edmund died in 1788 and is buried at Saint George’s church, Preshute by Marlborough. He has no descendants that we know of.
78. Elizabeth COMPTON (Thomas5, John4, Tristram3, John “the Elder”2, Edward1). Born in 1719 in England. Christened on 3 Apr 1737 in Enford, Wiltshire, England. Elizabeth died in England in 1785; she was 66.

Daniel Compton and family: This branch of the Compton family broke off from the main Chitterne source in 1660 when John Compton (1632-1705), the great-grandson of Edward Compton (d. 1580), married Joan Crouch of Codford St. Peter and moved to Rushall.
Here six children were born, of which Thomas became the father of ten children. Of these Thomas, the eldest surviving son moved to Hampshire and began the branch there which, although now scattered, survives to this day.
The second-to-youngest son, Daniel (1720-1780), was christened with most of his brothers and a sister in 1737 at Enford following the death of their father in 1734. Daniel had been born in Chisenbury de la Folie in the parish of Enford. He married Judith Lavington at Potterne in 1756. She was a daughter of Richard Lavington and his wife Judith Edwards a family living in the area for centuries and probably taking their name from nearby Market Lavington with its splendid pub The Green Dragon.
This marriage caused the move to Urchfont, where Daniel was to farm the Manor Farm. He was there in 1768 when he is mentioned as hosting the sale of Sir William Pynsent's effects. The latter had lived at Urchfont Manor - or House, as it was to be called.
In 1775 the Comptons took on the manor, which they leased for 50 years altogether. It is a large and beautiful place.
In 1780 Daniel died, leaving behind Judith and their children: Daniel (1765-1817); Richard (1766-1823); John (1768-1701) and Judith (1759-1847). She married William Keetch, a member of another old Urchfont family.
Daniel was probably buried in the crypt under the church, at least that is if one takes 'near this place' to mean that. The crypt was brick up in later years. One wonders, did they take take an inventory of the occupants? Daniel and Judith's memorial on the inner south wall is of grey marble with a few discreet curlicues. Judith died in 1789. Both their wills are extant.
Daniel junior married Harriet Townsend (1760-1829) who came from Newbury in Berkshire. They had a daughter, Harriet, who married Nathaniel Atherton of Calne, and a son, John Townsend Compton.
Richard married Elizabeth, daughter of Mr Wheeler of Great Shefford in Berkshire. He was said to be a clergyman, but no trace of him is to be found in either the Alumni Oxoniensis or Cambrigiensis, where clergymen are usually found. My source was an old family tree from the 1800s. They had two sons and two daughters. Their line stopped there.
In 1756 when Daniel was 36, he married Judith LAVINGTON in Urchfont, England. Born in 1734. Judith died in Urchfont, Wiltshire, England, in 1789; she was 55. Buried on 4 Jun 1789 in Urchfont, Wiltshire, England.

RESEARCH NOTES
Is this their marriage?
- Wiltshire, England, Marriages, 1538-1837 about James Compton
Name: James Compton
Marriage Date: 19 Dec 1764
Parish: Out of Wiltshire
Residence: Amesbury
Spouse: Mary Bull
Notes: Married at Whitchurch, Hants

From another researcher:
- At the time of marriage he was “of Amesbury”, quite near to Netheravon. They moved to Tilshead and their eldest son, James, was born in 1766. [or perhaps 1746???? - see notes under James Jr]

- James and Mary are buried in Netheravon, a pleasant village on the Avon. The village has a large medieval devecote and is near to the prehistoric Durrington Walls earthworks, Woodhenge and Stonehenge. There are a few Comptons here. By the southside of the chancel you will find two well-preserved red sandstone gravestones to James and Mary. Just to the south of them is a small altar tomb which covers the burial of James Jr. and Hannah.
- James of Tilshead and Netheravone (b. Enford, Wilts) & Mary Butt (b 1729 Whitchurch Harmshire) m. 1764

- Edmund's parents James and Mary Butt were married in 1764 so James Jnr. (if born in 1746) could hardly be their son but as James Snr. was 41 at this time, it is possible that he had been married before but to date have not found any record. The various wills do mention the names James Jr. and Edmund as though they are related. James Snr. appears to have had land at Tilshead but was left land at Netheravon by his brother Richard so it would appear that he moved to Netheravon and left the rest of the family Tilshead.

- The area of contention is whether James and Mary (Butt) are actually our Edmund of Tilshead's parents as I have still not been able to find either Edmund's or Margaret Lawes' place of birth as neither of them are in the Tilshead/Netheravon Parish Records. The dates fit and the fact that James was originally of Tilshead then given land in Netheravon by his brother Richard (Richard's will) appears to corroborate this.
In 1764 when James was 41, he first married Mary BUTT in Whitchurch, Hampshire, England. Born in 1729 in Whitchurch, Hampshire, England. Mary died in 1811; she was 82. Buried in Netheravon, England.

RESEARCH NOTES
POSSIBLE NAMES: Mary Bull or Ball, perhaps even Butt - BUTT as per marriage record
- From one source: Mary Bull of Whitchurch, buried Netheravon, also indexed as Bull
- From another source: the marriage document for James and Mary, [says her name] is definately Mary Butt. Chisenbury is quite near Enford in Wiltshire. ...the marriage certificate of James and Mary Butt [says] the marriage took place in Mary's parish of Whitchurch in Hampshire in 1764, James was from Amesbury, Wilts at that time.
They had one child:
103i.
Edmund COMPTON (1767-1847)
