Born in 1746 in Tilshead, England. James died in 1806; he was 60. Buried in Netheravon, England.
RESEARCH NOTES
- Was he born c1746 or c1766? Researchers vary on this. Or were there 2 different James Jrs? Father James Sr married Mary Butt in 1764, so if born 1746, James Jr would need to have been from his father’s previous marriage, and he would have been 42 when he married Hannah Barrett. Or if born in 1766, he would have married at age 22.
- From another researcher: James married Hannah Barrett from Tollard Farnham. They had no children together. James’ will is not extant, but from Hannah’s will we learn that James had a daughter, Ann, with Winifred Bartlett. Hannah left her 5 pounds, which was decent of her. Among her other belongingss were 2 silver tablespoons, 6 silver teaspoons, a large looking glass, a tea table and 295 pounds.
- There is another [?] James born in the 1700’s who died 1803 and married to Anna Barret B 1749 d 1819 in Netheravon. This James, according to wills, appears to be Edmund’s brother but he obvioiusly does not have the same mother as Edmund so the marriage to Mary Butt may have been senior James’ 2nd marriage (or James Jr. was born out of wedlock?) but evidence has not been found [either way]. James Jr. according to Anna Barrett’s will, had a daughter, Anna Bartlett with a Winifred Bartlett, but again the union has not been confirmed.

In 1788 when James was 42, he second married Hannah / Anna BARRETT. Born in 1749. Hannah / Anna died in Netheravon, England, in 1819; she was 70. Buried in Netheravon, England.

- Sometimes [her name] is Hannah and others just Anna and she was the wife of James jnr. who died in 1803 but I am not sure when he was born or where, as did not find him in Netheravon or Tilshead but he married Anna/Hannah Barrett in 1788. Anna/Hannah left a will stating that James had a 'natural born' daughter, Anna Bartlett [not Barrett?] to whom she left some money but I have not been able to find out anything about her as yet. I thought that 'natural born' was in wedlock and 'base born' was out of wedlock but I could be wrong. [perhaps she meant that James was daughter Anna’s natural father, even though her last name was not Compton, implying she was born out of wedlock when mom was single ?]
