From another researcher:
- Last Compton of Chitterne. Lived at Bridge Cottage by Compton’s Bridge in Chitterne St Marys. The cottage is painted white today; an old photograph shows it to have been natural stone or brick and behind a high hedge.Anne, or Annie, was a village legend. Well-read in history and most interested in the village and its past, she represented the village in the Warminster Rural Districgt Council, becoming the oldest counciller in England. She was a member of the Board of Guardians of the Warminster Workhouse. There were only 875 women guardians out of a total of 29,000 in England and Wales. Briefly she was a school mistress in London, which must have been when she vanished from the 1881 census! In 1931 she died at the age of 91, one of the really old Comptons. She is buried with her parents and her sister Elizabeth under a lichened stone. It is undeciperable, but the lichen is beautiful.
