From other researchers:
- she never married
- trained as a nurse and served overseas in WWI
- She trained at Boston General Hospital.* After training as a nurse in Boston, she joined her family in Regina She was listed as living with Janet and George Smith when she enlisted to go overseas in World War I, on Apr 16, 1917. According to a conversation with my aunt Marion, her boat was torpedoed off the coast of Ireland. She nursed in a military hospital in England until Dec 1917 and then transferred to St. Omer, France, then to Etaples, France, where the field hospital was bombed for 3 nights, and 2 nursing sisters and many patients were killed. Again, according to Marion, she was awarded the Royal Red Cross by King George V.
She never married and moved to Vancouver along with her parents about 1926/27. She continued nursing in Vancouver until well into her seventies. In her later years she shared an apartment with her sister Janet. They lived at #103 - 1430 West 13th Ave, Vancouver.
* correction: no such hospital existed, but almost certainly it was the Massachusetts General Hospital … probably after it changed from the Boston Training School for Nurses (from 1873-1895) to the  Massachusetts General Hospital Training School for Nurses (1896-). .. it was associated with Mass General either way.  My source is the book History of the Massachusetts General Hospital Training School for Nurses (pub 1922) which is available online - http://collections.nlm.nih.gov No list of graduates unfortunately.

Certificate of service says that “Nursing Sister Gertrude Catherine CRESWELL, R.R.C. served in Canada, England and France with the C.AM.C., C.A.M.C. Depot, Westenhanger, #9 Can. Stationary Hospital Bramshott, #12 Can. General Hosp., Bramshott, #1 Can. General Hosp., #2 Can. General Hosp., 3rd Can. Casualty Clearing Staion, #7 Can. General Hosp., C.A.M.C. Cas.Coy., #16 Can. General osp., Orpington, and was struck of the Strength on 11 Aug 1919 by reason of general demobilization. Awarded the Royal Cross 16-6-19.

From a different researcher:
- The war diaries for the Assistant Director of Medical Services Bramshott [list] Catherine’s arrival at Bramshott on 21 Jun 1917. [see digital image] To find these diaries, go here to http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/archivianet/02015202_e.html and for the unit, type in Bramshott (NOTE the spelling; back then Bramshott had a double t at the end); scroll down to “War diaries - Assistant Director of Medical Services, Bramshott”. CAMC stands for Canadian Army Medical Corps.

- Catherine was awarded the Royal Red Cross Medal 2nd Class, as mentioned in several pages from the Official Medical History of WW1. Her name appears on page 353, second line from the top. A description of the medal appears here:
Catherine was decorated by the King at Buckingham Palace on 26 Jun 1919.
http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/collections/cmdp/mainmenu/group01/arrc
“Associate (Second Class) ARRC The award is made to a fully trained nurse or assistant nurse, probationer, or V.A.D. nursing member, who, belonging to one of the officially recognized nursing services, has shown special devotion and competency in the performance of nursing duties, over a continuous and long period, or who has performed some very exceptional act of bravery and devotion at her post of duty. Up to five percent of the total establishment of nurses could receive the ARRC. Associates may be elevated to Member as vacancies arise.”

- Catherine would have been given 3 medals – the RRC 2nd Class and because she left Canada and served in England – the British War Medal http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/collections/cmdp/mainmenu/group03/bwm
and because she served in a theatre of war (France & Belgium) – the Victory Medal http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/collections/cmdp/mainmenu/group03/vm18 .
The picture on the Veterans Affairs website shows an oak leaf on the Victory Medal which means that person would have been mentioned in despatches. As Catherine was not mentioned in dispatches, her Victory Medal would not have had an oak leaf on it. In addition, again because she served in France, she would have been entitled to a War Service Badge Class A http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/collections/cmdp/mainmenu/group08/aca This was a “lapel badge”.

- 1919: Her name is listed in the “Fifth Supplement to the London Gazetter of Friday, the 30th of May 1919”, dated 3 Jun 1919, page 6842 [left column, second from the bottom:that lists Catherine’s RRC 2nd Class. The first page is the cover page, the rest of the pages deal with the RRC Medals. Catherine’s name appears on the 4th page (6842), left column, 2nd from the bottom, under the subheading “Awarded the Royal Red Cross 2nd Class”, “Canadian Army Medical Corps.”:
“Miss Gertrude Catherine Cresswell, N./Sister”

- 1918: An article in Regina Morning Leader, Regina, Sask., Saturday, September 7, 1918, 6
“Miss Creswell For 24 Hours War Prisoner
A Regina Nursing Sister is Released by Hun After One Day as Captive
News of Nursing Sister Catherine Creswell, who left the city in May last year for overseas service, has been received by relatives here and a little story as yet unpublished comes to light. Nurse Creswell has had the experience of being a prisoner of war for twenty-four hours and then being released by a German officer who, it is alleged, had one little streak of humanity in him.
Nurse Creswell joined here and with Miss Bredin went to Kingston, where a number of Canadian nurses mobilized in May of last year. With the trip overseas commenced the thrills for Miss Creswell, for when their transport was rounding the coast of Ireland a German sub torpedoed it and Miss Creswell along with the rest of the passengers had to spend some hours in an open lifeboat on the waters. She among other nurses had to take oars and row for hours before reaching land. The transport was eventually brought to port.
On reaching England Miss Creswell was sent to Bramshott, where for a time she nursed among the Canadian soldiers. She was later attached to the No. 2 British Expeditionary Hospital in France and crossed the Channel to get to her work. Not long after reaching the hospital the Hun airmen came over and bombed the hospital.
During the recent drive by the Germans a horde of the Huns came over and reached the hospital where Miss Creswell was working, taking her, along with several others, as prisoners of war. According to reports, the German officer who was in charge of the captives, after holding them for 24 hours, released them, for which everyone was duly thankful.
Miss Creswell was then given a short furlough and while on her holidays met her brother, Capt. Austin Creswell, in London. The latter is on his second trip over there, has completed his course in aviation and soon expects to be up in the air after the Hun birdmen.”

- In the book “For All We Have and Are – Regina and the Experience of the Great War” page 87, it mentions the horrific experiences of N/S Creswell [WW1 military nurse] – surviving a torpedoing, rowing ashore, surviving a hospital bombing and being a 24 hour prisoner of war. … N/S Creswell left Canada sometime between 16 Apr 1917 when she attested in the Canadian Expeditionary Force and 21 Jun 1917 when she is documented in the War Diary as arriving at Bramshott Military Camp in England.... The details on the book, “For All We Are ... “ are located here: http://uofmpress.ca/books/detail/for-all-we-have-and-are In addition to mentioning Catherine on pages 87 and 280, her brother Austin is mentioned on pages 67, 87, and 137 – 138.

- From another researcher: The sailing list … proves that Catherine did travel across the Atlantic on the SS Ausonia. It was a strange way to find a sailing list. Normally one searches for the sailing list of a military unit and from there the ship is discovered. This time, one had to know the name of the ship first which makes the exercise extremely difficult. I was able to find the name of the ship by using sailing lists for ships departing on 31 May 1917 and a database of ships damaged by torpedoing but making it to port.
One of the items that helped nail down the name of the ship was a letter a researcher friend sent to me written by a military nurse, Mildred Drope, in July 1917. Her military file again was silent on the name of the ship she travelled on, but her dates of embarkation and disembarkation were the same as those of Catherine. In addition, in the letter Mildred briefly described being torpedoed, hitting the life boats and being rescued by a British destroyer. You had indicated, as did the newspaper article, that Catherine’s ship was also torpedoed. All this seemed to suggest the SS Ausonia.
- A sailing list of the SS Ausonia for 31 May 1917 includes Mildred Drope’s name as well as Catherine’s name and that of E Bredin – another nurse that is mentioned in the 7 Sep 1918 Regina Leader article. The SS Ausonia was torpedoed on 11 Jun 1917. Articles appeared in the Canadian press on 21 Jun 1917 briefly describing the torpedoing. Apparently the Ausonia put into Queenstown – now called Cobh, Ireland for repair. One wonders if there may have been any interviews published particularly in the Irish papers (given the great love the Irish had of the British particularly after the Easter Rising of 1916).

- In later years she lived with widowed sister Janet "Jen" (Creswell) Smith in Vancouver BC

- Janet Marion Creswell married George Smith (probably in 1911) they moved into a newly built house at 2338 Smith Street in Regina. June 30, 1912 was an extremely hot day and humid day in the city. The young couple had invited her sister Catherine and brother Fred for Sunday noon dinner. Suddenly a breeze blew through and dark clouds gathered in the southwest. George went upstairs to close the windows. Coming down the stairs he was picked up by what was then a tornado, and blown out the front door of the house. Picking himself up he found the house flattened by winds that peaked at up to 200 miles per hour. He feared that the rest of the family was dead. However they were saved by the buffet in the dining room which kept the wall from falling on them. For the remainder of her life Janet mourned the loss of her 12 piece set of china and her many other wedding presents destroyed by the cyclone. One lone vegetable dish was all that remained of the china. They were, however, lucky to escape with their lives. Twenty-eight people died in the disaster and their street took the brunt of the storm. In the words of a website about the cyclone:
Along Lorne and Smith Streets recently built frame houses crumpled under the strain of the storm. They had been constructed with unbraced joints, and the high tornadic winds collapsed the flimsy balloon-framed houses. One block of Lorne and Smith Street was directly in the path of the tornado. On this block, the houses were levelled completely, many battered down by the swirling winds. Others exploded as the pressure inside the house rose when the tornado passed over it.

- In a letter dated Jan 12, 1971 to her granddaughter, she once wrote “" We had a wonderful childhood.  I was the youngest of seven girls.  I had an older brother and two younger ones.  Our farm, which was just one mile from Richmond Bay, was one of the best.  We often went swimming (bathing, excuse me, for we wore stockings & quite long bathing suits.  Not much like they wear today. Eh, what.) My Dad had a large sailing vessel & we often went across to Curtain Island on picnics & would come back with pails of raspberries and blueberries.  We had wild strawberries on our farm, small & hard to pick but most delicious.  My Dad also had trotting horses as well as farm horses.  We had a team of chestnuts which were beautiful.  Catherine used to drive them, being one of the older ones in the family.  The soil is red.  Our old house still stands, I believe, but many were taken over by the air force. I left P.E.I in the year 1905.  My oldest brother was the first to leave PEI.  Then Dad thought he would sell the farm & move to Sask (Regina)."

- ix Arthur `Austin' Creswell #70267 b. 21 Jun 1891, North St. Eleanors Prince PEI CAN, Occ./Title: ? dsp, m. Cora Elliot #121018, b. ___ 1897, Tweed Ontario CAN, Occ./Title: Homemaker.

- Austin was a really good hockey player, and the family said he could have made a fortune in the NHL if he'd lived later (which may or may not be true of course)... he was captain of the Regina Victorias hockey team which won the Allan Cup in 1914. The link to the first mention of him is here http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=753990 - search for Creswell for other references

> Regina Shamrock Hockey Team, Amateur Champions of Saskatchewan 1910-11
> In the 1912 season, Austin played as cover with the Regina Bees [page 33]
> In the 1913-14 season, A Crewell played goal for the Vics in southen division. They won 17 out of 21 games for the provincial title, and 21 out of 25 games in total, winning over the Edmonton Dominions, Winnipeg Monarchs to win the Allan Cup, also winning over Grand Mere of Quebec. Total goals scored: 166; goals allowed against: 70. [pg 38] also 39, 40
> 1921? season there was a “Creswell” who played for the Milestone team, defeated by the Saskatoon Nationals (CNR) [pg 110]
[pg 259 shows a woman named Crewswell McLean who played on the women’s team Moosomin in 1915]

- 1915 Austin fought in WW1 - signed up in1915 in Regina with another Officer's Declaration in 1917 - belonged to the 95th Sask. Rifles (active militia), 2 years CEF
- Although one article mentions that Austin was recommended for a DSO (Distinguished Service Order), my reference material indicates that he was not awarded this decoration.

- The 1941 border crossing record [film] seems to show that Austin had been living in the states, since September 1925 [to Sep 13, 1941], and that he'd only briefly been in Canada before crossing back on Sept 15, 1941. Unfortunately I can't make out the meaning of the second line at all, to figure out why it seems to have a reference to Sept 1942 [likely his Resident’s ID card expires 2/12/42]. It does give his street address in Seattle, more clearly shown in his 1942 U.S. Draft Registration card, which I'm also attaching. In the 1930 US Census he's listed as living as a boarder at 33 Pacific Avenue, Kelso City, Cowlitz County, Washington and his occupation is salesman at a service station. In 1944 he became a naturalized US citizen (the attached scan only lists his name and the volume number in which his application appears, but Ancestry.com says it's 1944). I'd been told that he'd gone to the States to play semi-pro hockey, but all these references refer to him working for oil companies. Of course, I'm sure that playing semi-pro didn't pay enough to support people in those days, nor do I know how long his hockey career lasted.

- According to his niece [2012]: “Uncle Austin was a lovely guy---he married my mother in 1968 and they had 12 years together. He was a WW1 flying ace, and a hockey player before the war [he is in the Sask. sports hall of fame in Regina] After the war he returned to his hockey career--was signed to play for Los Angeles on the first artificial ice there. Remained in the U.S. Had a laundry business in Redding and other places. Interesting love story I can tell you about regarding his first wife.”
NOTE: Austin was a WW1 pilot although officially not an “Ace” as he did not shoot down five or more opponents in aerial combat. He was not listed in the book “Above the Trenches – A Complete Record of the Fighter Aces of the British Empire and Units of the British Empire Forces 1915 – 1920” and its Supplement volume, nor in the book “A History of 24 Squadron” where Austin was assigned from 5 Oct 1918 until 26 Jan 1919. He is listed as a flying officer in their “B” Flight during that period: Lieut. A. A. Cresswell.

- 2012 memories from his niece / step-daughter:
“When Lorena died, Austin brought her ashes up to Victoria to bury them with her parents. My mother was living in White Rock then . Austin and Aunt Jean [Smith, your grandmother] and my mother drove to sask. to visit us. On this trip my mother and austin decided to marry which ended happily. We loved him--he was just a lovely guy. They lived in Redding Cal. for a year and then moved to Victoria, and were very happy here.”

From other researchers:
- Austin lived in California looking after his wife who was an invalid then [ca 1963] (her name was Lorena). When Lorena died, Austin brought her ashes up to Victoria to bury them with her parents.

- Lorena’s last name was Rourke. I don’t know if that was her maiden name or her first husband’s name. She had two daughters and divorced her husband to marry Austin. I don’t know the whole story, but Austin and Lorena were sweethearts before he went to war, and somehow she received the news that he had been killed. She had already married when she found out the truth, but years later she and Austin were reunited and had many happy years.

- While reading your blog about Arther Creswell you mentioned you didn't have his wife Lerena's maiden name. After doing some digging, I believe I have come up with the answer. Lorena Marguerite Rourke, or alternate middle names Olive Evangeline.
She is the daughter of William Rourke and Amelia Graham. One brother, two sisters, one sister dying at age 3. She was previously married to Henry Jesse Quimby and had one daughter. Their marrige record is in the Archives B.C.

** Is this Lorena M really age 9, Henry’s daughter and William’s granddaughter and her mother’s name sake, or was she Henry’s wife and William’s daughter-in-law with the age mis-recorded (should be 25 in this census - where is she? Was she already remarried?) The birth location aren’t right for either one!

- 2012 - memories from daughter Maidra:
My father Fred was a teacher in his earlier life--went to university in saskatoon to study agriculture for a year--was interested in cattle breeding which he did later in his life. During the dirty 30's he and mother and 3 children [then] moved from the south of sask. to Kelvington--where there had been no crop failures, and a bit more prosperity. He was a hospital administrator for awhile and then started hatching chicks in the basement of the house he built. When I was 3 the family moved to Wadena where he bought a hatchery. He was well over 50 when he started this business--plus a bit of farming, and raising a registered flock of chickens, and pure bred herefords. He died 49 years ago this week [19 Nov 1963]--3 days before Kennedy was shot [22 Nov 1963]. He hadn't seen his brother Austin in many years--as Austin lived in California looking after his wife who was an invalid then [her name was Lorena]. Dad phoned Austin a few days before he died [unexpectedly] at 68. As you know his brothers and sisters lived lengthy lives. When Lorena died, Austin brought her ashes up to Victoria to bury them with her parents. My mother [Cora] was living in White Rock then . Austin and Aunt Jean [your grandmother] and my mother drove to sask. to visit us. On this trip my mother and austin decided to marry which ended happily. We loved him--he was just a lovely guy. They lived in Redding Cal. for a year and then moved to Victoria, and were very happy here.
